The attitude of adolescents to physical punishment
60 adolescents at the age of 12-17 participated in the study. Of these, 30 adolescents were brought up in an orphanage and 30 – in families. To diagnose adolescent relationships to physical punishment, a specially developed questionnaire was used, the picturesque test "I was punished", the modified version of the "unfinished sentence" technique.
In the study of a conscious attitude to the punishment of adolescents raising in different social conditions, we identified general and specific signs of personal sense of punishment. As it turned out, regardless of the conditions of residence, the physical punishment is a significant impact for adolescents affecting the personal semantic sphere, attitudes towards the aggressor, causes and consequences of punishment, as well as the sphere of experiences. Revealed general features are clearly due to the patterns of age development, as well as assimilation of aggressive behavior of adults in society and the family.
Punishment is perceived by adolescents as an expression of a certain ban. However, one third of them recognizes that physical punishment does not cause any change in behavior. Others note correction of behavior, repentance in their act. It is alarming that after punishment, some teenagers prefer to leave the house and find out on the street.
To the means of physical punishment to which adults are most often resorted, adolescents include objects that can be influenced by physical injury, cause pain, in particular belt. In addition, it is indicated by physical labor as a serious means of punishment. The main causes of physical punishment themselves are associated with "bad behavior" and "unsuitable".
The specificity of the relationship of adolescents to punish. Teenagers of the orphanage more often the cause of punishment is a violation of discipline, bad behavior, absenteeism, shoots from the orphanage. The paradox is that physical punishment can not only be positively perceived by this category of adolescents, but also to cause positive emotions.
For their peers from families, the cause of punishment is mainly associated with the abomability of school, lies, rudeness in relation to adults, reaching rudeness. The experience of pain in punishment is accompanied by a sense of guilt and recognition of the justice of physical impact. The consequences of punishment of teenagers raised in the family include aggression and alienation.
In the study of the unconscious relationship of adolescents, a more visible role of education conditions was revealed to punish. Teenagers raised in an orphanage tend to attach great importance to their own "I" when punished and punishment. Along with this, they are less significant aggressor, causes and consequences of punishment. A rather rare image in the drawings of the aggressor can be explained as a humane attitude to children in the orphanage and the mechanism of displacement.
At an unconscious level, the punishment seems more significant for adolescents raising in the family. They are noticeably centered on the fact of punishment, on aggressor and their own experiences. More prone to the inclusion of protective mechanisms, such as rationalization.
The study can be continued towards expanding the object and punishment. It is advisable to identify the relationship of adolescents to economic punishment.
