Jacob, it’s so great to have you back on the show.
Thank you so much. It’s a pleasure to be with you again.
Let’s start with something that you shared with me at the very end after we finished recording the last time. It was so helpful and I wished that we had included it in the episode itself. You walked me through something called a Brock string and how I could improve my eyesight by kind of working out my eyes like a gym workout. I had no idea that you can even do something like this. Could you explain to our listeners what is a brock string, how you use it, and what the benefits are?
Yeah. Frederick Brock was a highly respected vision care specialist. He developed this technique where he had a string with a series of beads on it, like little movable beads. When one end of the string was up against his upper lip and the string was outstretched in front of him, he looked at one of the beads, a very interesting phenomenon would occur. Even though there were only one string and one bead, when he looked at that bead with both eyes–if the person was using both eyes, it would appear as though there were two strings: one almost coming out of each eye and pointing right toward the bead. By looking at the bead, if you saw two strings, you would immediately know if you’re using both eyes at the same time.
The other thing that was interesting is that if you’re looking right at the bead, both strings would crisscross or converge right where the bead is. Most of the time, what Brock noticed, I noticed the same thing in my work, is that a person thinks they’re looking at the bead but the two strings are converging a little closer to them which means they think they’re looking at the bead but they’re actually looking closer to themselves.
Or the opposite could also occur where they think they’re looking at the bead and the strings are converging a little further beyond that. What that means and why that is so significant is that we all assume that we are looking at what we believe we’re looking at—what we think we’re looking at.
What I have found in the research I did and published in the ’70s is that about 70% of the population is not actually looking precisely where they think they’re looking. Now you say, “What’s the importance of that?” Well, every move we make is visually guided. Where we think something is, how quickly it’s moving, that all determine how we respond to it. If we cannot determine precisely where it is, then we might swing the bat too early or too late, or press on the break early or late. In other words, the timing and the accuracy or our level of performance is going to be altered significantly by whether we are looking where we think we’re looking or not.
The actual source of your seeing is something beyond your eyes and mind. Click To TweetBrock string is very interesting. You refer to it as an exercise. Yes, you can use it by moving your eyes from 1B to the next to make sure you’re using both eyes at each point. Where I find it really powerful, it’s the only exercise I’m aware of that allows you to see precisely where your eyes are looking and allows you to determine am I looking where I think I’m looking or am I looking a little closer to myself or a little further away. In the process of uncovering that, I also discovered that when we look at things, we most of the time do it with effort. When effort is involved in seeing, one of the first things that happen is we hold our breath. When we hold our breath, our eyes will not naturally focus where we think we’re looking. The person can initially notice, “Gee, am I looking where I think I’m looking?” Two, “What happens if I start breathing? How does that impact things?”
The other thing that is even a higher level revelation is that this exercise with the Brock string allows you to notice where your eyes are looking. That brings up a very important question, what is in you or what is in us that is noticing where our eyes are looking? Why that is so profound, is that we all assume we’re seeing with our eyes or we are seeing with the mind’s eye. This exercise allows you to notice that there’s another level, that there is something that’s actually noticing where the eyes and mind are focusing. By using that awareness, we begin to recognize that the actual source of our seeing is something beyond eyes and mind. It’s more of a neutral observer rather than the mind’s eye which sees from a point of view.
Brock string is a very simple device that’s outlined in my book, Luminous Life, but can bring about great awareness and not only help improve one’s eyesight, visual performance, how long they can read comfortably, and better performance in sports. It allows them to uncover a deeper level of their vision which over time can actually change our lives.
That’s pretty amazing. I would think of it as you said or as you pointed out, as an exercise. It’s really much more than that. You can go to yoga, just do the breathing exercise, and improve your health, your posture—the overall physical health. You could do yoga in a way that brings about more awareness of who you are and that you’re not just your thoughts and feelings. We actually have this discussion on our last episode.
This is like what you’re talking about with the Brock string. Yes, you can improve your eyesight. You don’t have to get Lasik and potentially you could reverse some myopia that’s happening over time. You can also get a new kind of awareness instead of focusing on the breath like you do the mind from this meditation exercise, you can focus on your vision. Is that right?
Yes. Let’s take that even a step further. Almost everything we do is based on a false assumption. The assumption is that we have to do something for something to occur. We go to yoga classes and we do the postures. We do this, we put effort into this, and so on. The teachers who are coaching us in the yoga classes keep trying to let you know to begin breathing again. The moment we put an effort or try to do something intentionally, that effort actually constricts the breath, tightens the muscle, and segments all the movements. It takes us from a state of flow to a state of segmentation.
The purpose of this higher level awareness is it begins to allow you to see that our seeing naturally occurs without us. There is nothing for us to do. When we are in our most relaxed state, it’s not only when we see in the best possible way, not only in terms of clarity but in terms of depth and breadth of our vision. But when we are most relaxed is also when we’re able to achieve those very difficult yoga postures. If you take that to the extreme, the optimal relaxation is no effort at all. It just occurs naturally.
What the average person doesn’t realize is that there isn’t any aspect of our physiology that is designed to initiate action. In other words, we are not designed to do, we are designed to respond. What we’re responding to is exactly the same animating force that all the other creatures and plant vegetation in the universe, the oceans, the planets, the weather, the seasons, our hearts, our breath… all of that are being animated by some animating force in this universe. Let’s not even put a name on it because it doesn’t have a name.
The body is continually adjusting itself in response to that guidance from mother nature so that it is always in a beautiful and harmonious relationship with life. It’s sort of like two people dancing; there’s someone that is leading and there’s someone that is following. When they’re really inseparably connected, you don’t know who’s doing what because neither one of them is actually doing anything. It’s literally two that has merged into oneness. That oneness is that optimal state where we think of as magic, precognition, being in the zone, peak experiences, that’s where that actually occurs. What’s that all about is the fact that we are inseparably connected with everything and everyone all the time.
We think of a relationship as two things because our whole life we conceive that we are observing the world. That’s not actually what’s going on. We are inseparable. We are part of this process called the world, life, and so on. As that relational dynamic switches from two separate things connecting to just recognizing that at a fundamental level with everything is inseparable, then all of a sudden what we begin to experience in life is very magical. You could call it contentment. That, for me, has become the foundation of everything that I find myself sharing with people because I feel that’s really the indescribable essence of life that allows us to touch into these places that we’ve been led to believe we have to work at in order to get to.
I’ve had some really profound experiences merging into oneness, as you said, like this one time at an Ashram in India called Oneness University. I felt the connection there. Another time, when I was in Udaipur in India, I get that feeling a lot more now than just when I go to India but it’s not a normal state of being. You’re kind of on an autopilot a lot of the time. Then, you have to kind of switch your awareness. In Kabbalah, they refer to it as the 99% reality which is all the other stuff—the nonphysical that is outside of our normal awareness. The 1% reality is where we spend most of our time and focus like the things that are supposedly real and right in front of us like paying the bills, moving the furniture, that sort of stuff.Have you had a particularly profound experience that you’d like to share with our listeners around merging into oneness or feeling that oneness?
They’ve been going on since I was a small child. My mother used to say that I was too sensitive because things would enter my awareness that I didn’t know where they came from. What I’d like to do is actually bring this into something that’s pretty tangible for everyone rather than some magical experience that I had or something that occurred while being in meditation or an Ashram or whatever.
We all know that there are certain people in life that we have met, even though we may not have known them, where we just feel in sync. Sometimes you’re sitting on an airplane and all of a sudden, a conversation seems to begin on its own with the person sitting next to you. All of a sudden, you find yourself speaking about things that are obviously of great importance to both of you and they’re the same thing. You have no idea, “how is it that I’m sitting right next to this person that I feel this connection with?” When we feel that connection, that sense of feeling in sync, that sense of harmony occurring, something magical happens. The first thing we say is, “Wow, time really flew.” The reason is that time ceases to exist in that particular state.
Most of us are very aware of it when we fall in love. Something happens when we connect with someone and we get this feeling like, “Geez. I’ve met them before. I feel like I’ve known them forever. They really get me.”
One of the interesting things that occur when we fall in love, whether it be with another person, a close friend, or experience in India as you spoke about, something really interesting occurs. It seems as though our sense of our individual self seems to just vanish. Then, something else, what you refer to as autopilot, seems to occur.
One of the things that is really profound in that state is that we seemingly forget all of our problems. For that period of time, we often forget that a few minutes before, we were concerned about finances, or we were concerned because of a health issue, or we were worried about this or that. It’s almost like we were taken somewhere else. Many people notice that when they went to India, sat with a great teacher and so on.
Pretty much everyone who’s listening right now had the experience of being in love. What’s really profound about that is that when we enter that state of inseparability, of oneness, of love, of sympathetic resonance, not only do our problems disappear. When the problems disappear from the mind, the impact of that overtime is – I believe that is the beginning of what we call spontaneous remission. Most of the time, we don’t have enough of that in our lives. The more that experience pervades our life, the more problems seemingly begin to disappear.
The body is continually adjusting in response to the guidance from Mother Nature so that it is always in a beautiful and harmonious relationship with life. Click To TweetTo give you an example, let’s say we decide to go to someone because they’re a healthcare provider or a complementary practitioner or someone we call a healer. We usually go to them because someone said, “Gee, they’re really terrific.” Or you just met someone and you had a feeling about them. You get there. Then, we notice that when we’re with them, how we feel about them is really important. If we do not feel connected with our doctors or our complementary practitioners, we usually will look for someone else. Why? I mean, they’re a good surgeon or a good diagnostician but that isn’t enough, is it? We want some connection with them.
What’s really fascinating about this phenomenon is that if two people come together to focus on some sort of a diagnosed issue—a person has this and they seek out someone who’s going to help them with that. When that occurs, regardless of the type of treatment that is being offered, whether it is allopathic medicine or some complementary wellness approach or hugging, it doesn’t make a difference what. If the two people feel connected and both feel good about what’s occurring, and the person has come to that connection naturally—meaning that maybe the person or where to go look for that person came to them while they’re meditating or praying or whatever it is, just occurred naturally as part of their life. When that occurs, regardless of what you’re doing, you get about an 80% success rate.
What’s fascinating is the moment that you question that particular therapy which is essentially what science does, it says, “You cannot trust that you just got better.” We need to determine why it occurred. Does this really work? When the devil’s advocate aspect of the scientific community says, “We need to figure out why it works. We need to randomize the samples. We need to have a placebo control or a crossover design study.” The moment we do that, we notice something really fascinating. The more controls, the more placebos, the more we scrutinize the process, which essentially means that we’re no longer in the state of oneness, we’re in the state of separation. The moment we begin to do that, the effectiveness of what previously occurred at a level of 80% reduces very dramatically.
If you do a study where the “placebo,” the inactive pharmaceutical or treatment is almost identical to what you’re doing, the person really has no idea what’s going on. You can reduce the effectiveness of something that previously worked rather well to not working at all.
In physics, they have something that’s similar to this, it’s called Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle which essentially says that if you try to determine the position of something, you can’t determine the speed of something. Things are always changing, it means we can’t really determine accurately what’s going on, or the opposite is true. Essentially, what it means is the more we look, the less we see. This is why we say, “A watched pot never boils.”
What is the relevance of all of these? It comes back to the fundamental thing we were speaking about is the relationship, the inseparability. When two merge into oneness, then, you start getting magical effects that you cannot explain with the mind. The moment you say, “Well, we need to really see what’s going on. We need to find the active ingredient.” That’s the keyword in the pharmaceutical society.
I’m not saying anything bad about that because I’m a firm believer that we have incredibly, miraculous aspects of the allopathic medical model. What I’m sharing is that our idea is that we think that if we’re trying to find why something works, let’s say, we say there’s an active ingredient and everything else is sort of inactive. We then synthesize something that we think is the active ingredient. It has some effect but it also has more side effects. Those side effects are created because of this false idea that within mother nature, there are certain things that are important and others that are just less important.
There is no active ingredient. The active ingredient is the full spectrum of whatever that is. If we look at the light, for instance, people say, “Oh, you can use blue light to lower blood pressure. In fact, it works as well as blood pressure lowering drugs. You can use green light for migraine and headaches. You can use red light for pain.” All of those things are true but when we begin to break things down into parts and try to use the parts, even though they may have some positive impact, they create side effects. Those side effects can really complicate things dramatically.
It’s very important you had mentioned earlier about blue light. When we go into sunshine during the day, the sun has a tremendous amount of blue light as a component. It also has a tremendous amount of red light that balances it out. It’s designed that way to have a certain impact on nature. What designs that miraculous source? I have no idea. It’s delivered in a very balanced format.
When we create a computer or an iPhone, the light source has a predominance of blue energy but very little red energy in relationship to what the source offers, being sunlight. All of a sudden, we start to see those side effects. Not only does it impact our sleep, our hormones, and many other things. But because the body is a biological photocell, it’s literally a light receptor, whose functions are totally responsive to light on a continually ongoing basis. Anytime you’re using a light source from a computer, a cell phone, a lighting overhead inside of your office or home, or using things such as sunglasses continually, or blocking your skin by using sunscreen continually. None of these things are bad, but we’re told to use them all the time, we become addicted to them. Then, we create health hazards because we’re not getting what is natural. We’re getting what we think is normal.
We end up with chronic illnesses from this unbalanced blue light exposure. Then, not getting enough sunlight which is essential for our health. We cover our eyes all the time with sunglasses. We cover our skin so we don’t get burnt. Then, we end up getting cut off from the essential healing and rejuvenating force—the sun and the sunlight. We’re not getting enough Vitamin D. We’re not getting enough phytonutrients.
The sunlight is the most powerful nutritional source that we have. In 2017, a Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology was awarded to three US scientists that discovered the molecular basis of how each of the cells of our body is continually adjusting themselves to the changes in the environmental lighting. Light, darkness, and all the change in spectral characteristics throughout the day.
That ability for our cells to continually harmonize themselves with the environment of light is what keeps us in a state of oneness, a complete relationship with mother nature, and has an incredible impact on ensuring health and wellness. Every function of the body is light dependent.
If you live in California and decide you want to go to London, you get on a plane at dinnertime in Los Angeles. You arrived in Heathrow, it’s seven in the morning. Everyone knows that experience we call jetlag, where all of a sudden, we find ourselves falling asleep during the day rather than at night or waking up at night, eating at times we normally would not be eating, using the bathroom we would normally not using the bathroom. In general, feeling out of sorts. Sometimes feeling like we’re going to come down with something because we feel so out of sync.
That’s an example of short term disconnection from Mother Nature, everyone can relate to that. We’ve all had it and your body gradually adjusts. Most of us are chronically jet lagged and we’ve never gotten on a plane. Its because when the sun starts to go down, we should naturally feel more relaxed, getting ready for the evening, and slowing down. But when we get on our computers or we get on our cellphones or other sorts of technology that we’re using, the light from those particular devices essentially tell our body that it’s daytime when it’s actually nighttime.
You are inseparably connected with everything and everyone all the time. Click To TweetThe impact of that is the same as what happens to shift workers. If you look at individuals that work the night shift, you’ll see a much higher significant increase in the prevalence of a whole variety of cancers that are hormonally related. There are certain cities in the world that never get dark like New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, London and so on. If you go into neighborhoods in any of these cities where people are trying to sleep but there are street lights outside and they’re not able to block the light, you’ll also see higher incidents of a variety of diseases including cancers because we were speaking about the nutritive qualities of light, but there’s also the opposite impact of light pollution, getting too much light at the wrong times. This is a really critical thing that’s going on worldwide right now.
For instance, in our home, we disconnect our WiFi, we close the shades. Of course, we don’t really have street lights where I’m at, so we don’t even have to, but we do that and it ensures that we get a very restful night sleep. Just little and simple things like that are super important.
From [6:00] AM to [12:00] PM is an optimal time for your body to take in the sun and to synthesize vitamin D. Why is that important? Every disease of civilization, which means every disease associated with our lifestyle – which is cancer, heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, and a variety of others, every single one of them is related to a deficiency of vitamin D which is a man-made deficiency. It is based on the fact that over the last 25 or 30 years, doctors have said to don’t go out in the sun, stay out of the sun, put sunscreen on, block the sun with sunglasses and so on. Now we have a huge vitamin D deficiency. Because of that, an increase in the prevalence of all these different kinds of diseases.
What we find, research-wise is the populations that get the greatest amount of sun have the greatest amount of health. Everything is in moderation, what I recommend to people is go outside each day and get your minimum daily requirement of sunlight. I tell people, begin with one minute. If possible, if the temperature’s warm, layout with minimum amounts of clothing because when the sun directly shines on larger parts of the body, your torso, front and back, large portions of your legs, this is where it has its maximum impact. If you can lay out naked, it’s even more valuable because the sun does everything from lowering blood pressure, respiration, stress hormones, increasing mood, reducing the impact of all kinds of diseases, increasing testosterone levels significantly and so on.
Even if you’re someone who enjoys working out, if you work out in a gym, you get a certain benefit. If you work out outside doing exactly the same thing for the same amount of time, you burn twice as many calories and you get a tremendous impact. As I mentioned before, the blue light in the sun will significantly lower your blood pressure to the same degree as pharmaceutical agents designed to do that, that’ll occur in about half an hour a day.
I tell people to start out with a minute or two, increase by a minute each day. What happens is your skin will naturally thicken and create something called melanin which will be a protector from too much light so you will build up your skin’s ability to handle the sun without having to use sunscreens. You don’t need more than maybe a half an hour a day. For instance, I walk probably three or four miles a day. When I take my walk, if the temperature is warm, I take my t-shirt off and wear shorts so that while I’m walking for an hour, I get the full benefit of full sunshine. Those are just very simple little ideas that people can do.
If you wear glasses and you’re walking in a place that you feel safe, remove your glasses, see what it feels like, even that by itself can improve your eyesight. If you naturally walk like most people, walk backward for a short period of time, that will improve your memory dramatically. That is reverse engineering your neurology for a short period of time. We’re all used to doing things where we’re walking forwards but something profound happens when we walk backward.
That’s really interesting, I haven’t heard of that before. I’ve heard that if you cross the hemispheres of your brain by let’s say using your right hand to touch your left knee or vice versa, some sort of exercise where you’re crossing the hemisphere, that improves the connections between your hemispheres and improves the health of your brain. Where did you learn this, about walking backward?
I learned this from doing this. You’re speaking about having your brain, your right and left hemisphere working better. What are you essentially saying? You’re saying that when that happens, I work better. The reason I work better is because what I thought were two halves have actually merged into one, we have one brain.
Many years ago, when I was experimenting with many different things that could improve vision, wellness, security and so on, walking backward is one of the most profound.
For instance, when I’m walking, I have a favorite place to walk here on Maui called Thompson Road. It’s the road that has small hills that go up and down. When I walk up the hills, I walk straight ahead, when I walk down the hills I walk backward. Initially, when I did it, I did it very slowly. What do I do when I’m doing it? The tendency is when you do something different, all of a sudden you start looking at the ground, you’re looking where you’re stepping, you’re holding your breath, and you’re very tentative.
I moved very slowly as if I had eyes in the balls of my feet. I made sure that rather than looking down, I was just looking out at nothing and breathing gently. Now when I do it, I can walk faster backward than I do frontwards. I have absolutely no fear and my balance is beautiful. Each time I do it, I feel something new happening. These are things that I just developed myself. I imagine that my eyes are somewhere behind me and slightly above my head. I’m not looking with the eyes in my head, but I’m looking from a place outside myself. When I do that, it puts me into a state that I call open focus. Literally, I’m looking at nothing. When I’m looking at nothing, I begin to notice things that I’d never noticed before.
What I try to share with people is don’t necessarily do what I do, don’t believe or disbelieve what I’m saying. What I’m making a suggestion to do is to do a direct experiment on your own life, see what you discover that works for you because there’s nothing like our own direct experience. How I came to this whole revelation, if you will, about relational dynamics, and we know that in life, the reason they say no person is an island is because we’re all inseparably connected not only at a quantum physics state but in everyday reality, even though we’ve been led to believe that we are separate from the life we are observing. That occurs because we are seeing through the mind’s eye which is based on the conditioning ideas, beliefs, and concepts that we’ve been indoctrinated with.
What’s fascinating is the word belief means the opposite of the truth. What we’re really seeking is the truth that supposedly sets one free. My sense is that those discoveries come from direct experience. One of the most profound things that I think would be valuable to share is that we all notice that we seem to be very receptive and connected with certain aspects of our life and very disconnected with others. The things that we feel right at home with, they support us in staying in a state of ease.
When we encounter aspects of life that we don’t feel so connected with, we find that we’re transported into a state of dis-ease, we’re not at ease any longer. When we are at ease because we encounter something that is literally, vibrationally similar to ourselves, there is merging and enhancement of all aspects of wellness. When we encounter aspects of life that we are in a disharmonious state with, you could say the aspects and experiences of life that trigger us, trigger reactivity within us, what that does is it transforms us into a state that is a degradation of our wellness.
The more you look, the less you see. Click To TweetPeople who have awoken in life, whether it was someone who said, “Love thy neighbor as yourself.” Or when Ramana Maharshi spoke of unconditional acceptance, what those people were talking about is being in a relationship with life where we do not like or dislike the external world, but we have an internal compass that says yes to something harmonious and says yes to some part of ourselves that says just be cautious of that.
For instance, we might be walking in the forest and we get a sense to walk a little bit toward our left, unbeknown to us there’s poison oak. It isn’t that we hate poison oak, it’s our internal GPS guides us away from that because there’s something like a built-in allergic reaction to that. We’ve been conditioned to say, “That person is nice and that person is really crappy.” We like or dislike the world, what many people refer to as judgments and beliefs about life.
The real relationship is not with the external world, it’s with our inner compass, our inner GPS that guides us towards certain things and away from others. It’s not because it’s good or bad, but because it’s guiding us towards something that can support that state of wellness and that can naturally bring us into ease, greater health, greater peace, and so on.
What’s important about that is that we all know what I’m talking about in terms of our life experiences. What I discovered more than 40 years ago is people responded in that same way to colors. They said, “I like that color, I don’t like that color. I never wear that color. I would never have that color on the walls of my home. Red is very strong and offensive and blue is calming.” It’s the way it worked.
But I realized that just as we say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, everything is in the eyes of the beholder. 20 different people looking at what we say is the same color even though they all perceive it differently, they all have a different response or relationship with it. What I began to realize is that the experience we call life, what you refer to as the 1%, is actually a transformation of the 99% that is not visible to us. Essentially, the life we experience as people and things being solid is actually a transformation of energy, a fundamental variety of energies, you could say the electromagnetic spectrum that is fundamental to what we call life. Through some magic, we call it consciousness or use whatever word we want. That vibration is transformed into something that we perceive in the way that we do.
A dog, a dolphin, a bat, a bee, and a human being, all perceive the same reality totally differently. A snake does not at all see what we see, neither does a dolphin or a bee. The reason is each of these creatures has a different perceptual system. The perceptual system takes that fundamental vibration and transforms it into something that we see or sense in the way we see it or sense it.
What I’m saying is that, at a fundamental level, life emerges from very fundamental energies. At the most fundamental level, that energy is the energy or the vibration that we call light. Light is inseparable from life, they are merged as one. That’s why the Bible states that God, what we call the creative force, is light. This is why spiritual text refers to consciousness as light and why physicists refer to the fundamental vibration from where all life emerges as the vibration of light. Our relationship with the different portions of the light spectrum, which is what we experience as colors, is directly related to what we connect or feel disconnected with our life experiences.
What I have been playing with for 45 years now is utilizing color as a way of very gently supporting someone in dissipating or resolving something within themselves that they’re not even aware of, that causes them to connect with some things and recoil from others. If we become comfortable with the aspects of life that used to be uncomfortable, or if we become neutral with aspects of life that used to be uncomfortable, we find ourselves getting less rattled often, we experience less stress. When there’s less stress, there’s more of that oneness, there’s more of that merging, there’s more of that zone, that autopilot that you spoke about. That is what they call heaven on earth.
We’re still going to get sick at times. We’re still going to experience worry at times. That’s part of the human experience as well, but we will find more and more a greater sense of contentment, of appreciation, of gratefulness. I have not found that we can access those states through some technique other than maybe trust for a few moments, but when those states become our fingerprint, when, as Gandhi said, “Our life is our message,” something magnificent begins to occur and the smallest of things can have the greatest impact and can touch us so very deeply.
From that place, we connect with people in a way that is mutually optimal. When we leave, we feel better than we did when we came. For health care providers, my sense is that relationship, years ago they used to call it a bedside manner, is the most important aspect of the healing equation. Without that seamless relationship, we just don’t have the same chances of feeling better or getting well.
Relationship is the key to everything. When we begin to experience this merging, we experience something that I don’t even know how to speak about. I’m 71 years old, I’m going to be married in about four months. I’m having the most profound and magnificent experience of my entire life. I have never read about anything like this and I can honestly say that I have rarely met people, couples that when I look at them I say, “Oh my God.”
Every function of your body is light dependent. Click To TweetI’m sharing this with you, not because I did anything for this, I have no idea what creates us. I can’t really explain it to you, but it brings me to tears and I find myself being moved by subtle, little things that occur between my partner and I. What’s beautiful about these things is that they’re contagious. When I was in my medical training, they said that disease was contagious. But when I went into practice and I had the blessing of working with many thousands of individuals, I realized that wellness was even more contagious, that our connection with each other was truly the healing ingredient. It’s everything.
When we look at our political system today, it’s havoc. Why is it havoc? You see that relationship doesn’t occur, everything is adversarial, right and wrong, and so on. People that used to go into politics, we often refer to them as diplomats, they were diplomatic. It wasn’t that they learned an ability to be nice, it was that they had a knack for connecting with people in such a way that they were embraced. Trust naturally grew from that and friendship grew from that. When that occurs, everything is possible. When that doesn’t exist, hardly anything is possible.
Thank you so much for that powerful, thought-provoking and thoughtful interview. I know we’re out of time. If somebody wanted to take the next step in learning about light and life and how we’re all interconnected and how to connect up to the light in a more healthy and healing way, what should they do? Of course, picking up a copy of your book, Luminous Life, will be one of those things. Can they work with you on a coaching basis? What would be the next step?
Most of my work when I’m not speaking publicly is I mentor a small number of clients that I’d work on one-on-one. Most of them are from different parts of the world so it’s done via Skype or Zoom or through their iPhone. People can contact us through the website which is jacobliberman.org. I incorporate all of the work that I spoke about with light and color as part of that process.
Mentorship for me is a special kind of friendship, it’s not a doctor-patient relationship or a coach-client relationship. It’s two people who are of the same height coming together and sharing their life. There’s no set curriculum, the person brings whatever is current in their life and we allow the spontaneity of the moment to bring forth whatever it is that is supposed to be discussed or whatever it is that’s literally the grease for our mill.
Working without a set protocol is incredibly magical, it’s the magic underneath of what transpired today between the two of us. It’s what I notice each time I’m asked to speak publicly because I don’t prepare anything, it’s totally live. When I’m introduced and I sit, I make eye contact with people in the audience, then something guides whatever it is that’s supposed to be shared, I never know that in advance. The experience is incredibly magical for all of us.
The audience and myself, we are all taken to a place that’s, like what you spoke about where we just feel connected. Essentially, what my mentorship work is about is as much as I can, sharing through direct experience, those important aspects of life that have enriched my life the most, that have supported my health and wellness the most, my relationships with people, with loved ones, with family members and so on.
What’s very profound is that connection is so special that very often people get well from things that they have been concerned about and working with and so on for years and years and years, even though there’s no intention or focus on fixing anything. Because I don’t believe people need fixing; however, we all get well when we love each other. That’s as much as I can say about that.
Getting back in the balance. Thank you so much, Jacob. Thank you, listeners. Now it’s time to take some action from what you’ve learned even if it’s as simple as just getting some blackout blinds so that you get a better night sleep, or getting out in the sun more, or connecting to your significant other or friends or family in a more meaningful way, these are all great things that will help elevate your consciousness and bring you to greater health and wealth. Thank you so much. We’ll catch you on the next episode of Get Yourself Optimized next week. Thank you, we’re signing off.

Checklist of Actionable Takeaways
Do some eye exercises. Like training at the gym, I need to train my vision so that I can improve my eyesight and focus. Dr. Liberman suggests learning more about Brock String.
Develop a deep awareness of my body through yoga and meditation. Seeking within will help me reach a relaxed state that doesn’t occur naturally.
Seek mentors that can help me improve my mindset. Everyone needs guidance so be open to learning something new from somebody else.
Take note of the saying, “A watched pot never boils.” Try always to view life in the bigger picture because the more I look at the little things, the less I see.
Get a proper amount of sunlight exposure to balance out the blue and red light. Go for daily walks in the morning or just sit for a minute or two on the porch when I wake up.
Refrain from using electronics that emit artificial light such as cellphones, computers, TVs, etc. Make sure to turn these off at least three hours before I sleep.
Try walking backwards. According to Dr. Liberman, walking backwards awakens your senses. The tentative feeling heightens your awareness of your body and surroundings.
Seek out great connections and relationships that make life worth living. Nourish love and friendship and grow something memorable with people who are dear to me.
